What is thaedis?

thaedis has been set up to provide a new critical voice. We want to reconnect the knowledge of disabled peoples lived experience with the power of change.

The power of change is needed now more than ever in the current crisis- the meaning of disability is being changed-we are no longer considered the deserving poor, we are no longer considered to experience social, attitudinal and physical barriers but all these things remain in place despite the UK government’s desire to pretend they don’t.

Disabled people face greater levels of poverty and less access to their rights than in previous times: we need to reconnect our knowledge and power to make those things change.

thaedis aims to offer a voice through Digital Voice a new online magazine in which you can write the content and in which you can raise the issues important to you.

thaedis will also identify current campaigns as a way to take action; it will offer resources on current issues and future ones and develop a network that we hope will grow to share the real issues in the UK and in Europe today.

The Cost of Disabling Welfare Reform: fit to work?

Debbie Jolly

Up to spring 2014 all those who are receiving Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance and Income Support paid on the grounds of illness or disability will be assessed for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). They will undergo a stringent Work Capability Assessment.  The much criticised WCA has become even more punitive since changes in the 2011 edition of the training manual for assessors (see Jolly http://www.dpac.uk.net/2011/05/debbie-jolly-the-billion-pound-welfare-reform-fraud-fit-for-work/). Pilots in Aberdeen and Burnley have raised more criticisms of the process adding to the raft of criticisms from the British Medical Association, GPs, Citizens Advice Bureaus (CABs), Members of Parliament and disability organisations. The Daily Mirror reports new lengths the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP)  is going to in the drive towards the conservative mantra that ‘work will set you free’ . The latest inhumanity is to send letters to terminally ill people asking them if they are looking for work. The letter advises that the individual should see an employment adviser. This is connection with the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) . The DWP claims they send these letters to everyone who is receiving ESA. The recipients include people who have specifically told the DWP that they have less than six months to live. Read the rest of »

Thousands of disabled people rely on funding from the Independent Living Fund to enable them to live independently with choice and control over their lives. ILF users have been left shocked and extremely anxious since it was announced in 2010 that it would be closed down by government in 2015. Already closed to new applicants since May 2010 this decision was taken with no evidence of an equality impact assessment having taken place nor any consultation carried out with current and potential beneficiaries of the fund.
